Special Visitor

Kindergarten was pleased to welcome Dexter the Chameleon for a visit this spring. Mr. Heggie taught us all about how camouflage really works with these amazing reptiles, and we had a chance to see him up close.

St. Patrick's Day Chaos

Following St. Patrick's Day tradition, we left a shoe in our cubbies, hoping to find some leprechaun treasure. When we arrived at school today, sure enough, there was a quarter in each of our shoes!

....but this is what our room looked like! Those crazy little leprechauns were up to mischief again! And though we tried our best, we were not successful at catching one. Maybe next year!

I Am A Leprechaun

I am a leprechaun and I love to dance.
I am a leprechaun with ants in my pants.
I am a leprechaun and I love green.
I am a leprechaun and I'm not seen.
I am a leprechaun and I love gold.
I am a leprechaun and I'll never grow old!

Preparing for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is the perfect opportunity to get creative and use some problem solving skills to build and design the perfect leprechaun trap. Mrs. Thomson's kindergarten classes planned two different yet interesting models.

The first was a leprechaun playground. It came complete with a swing set, slide and jungle gym. Only problem was that the gravely bottom possessed a sneaky surprise - beneath the gravel is no floor. All the leprechaun has to do is come down the slide and down deep inside a hole, where he will be caught and held fast by a sticky amount of duct tape, till we return in the morning for our pot o' gold.

The next trap was based on the same principle, only, instead of constructing a playground, we designed a leprechaun swimming pool. Now just to wait and see what happens....

Flashlight Spaceflight

In gym this week we took a flashlight spaceflight in our gym.  We put on our spacesuits, strapped ourselves into our rockets and blasted into outer space.

As we floated through the galaxy we kept our eyes open for alien friends.  We found a few, and chased them down.  Those aliens sure are fast!

But nothing is quite as beautiful as the universe when your flying through the stars!

Take a Ride on the Snowflake Express

I was sorting through some pictures yesterday and realized that I never posted our pictures from our Christmas pajama party.  We started out the day with a ride on the snowflake express.  We each received a ticket to ride on this special train, which was punched by the conductor.  Then all aboard!  We went down steep mountains, twisted, turned and bumped along the track.

We enjoyed warm cocoa...

It was creamy....

Chocolatey....

Delicious...

And when we reached the North Pole, we watched the movie Walle (in honor of our recent recycling unit)...

While munching on popcorn...

And on our way home, discovered a special treasure under our chairs.

Merry Christmas!

Community Helpers - Police Station

The weather outside was frightful,

But the constable was so delightful,

With sirens and flashing lights to show,

To the jail we all did go,

Thank you to our local RCMP detachment for their hospitality!  We had a wonderful experience.

Community Helpers - Fire Hall

We took a trip to the local firehall for our community helpers unit.  Our fire chief, Charlie, showed us all the special equipment used by the fire trucks and ambulances when they go out on a call, and we got a chance to look at things up close...

And even try some of the gear on...

And imagine that we were driving the trucks...

And have an all around good time.

Fireman Stan

Every year we are excited to invite Fireman Stan to our classes.  And we are never disappointed - the presentation was once again well done.

We learn about important fire safety  - such as checking to make sure smoke detectors are working, and not to play with matches or lighters.

And fireman Stan showed us his gear, and how it keeps him safe when he does his important job.

Thank you fireman Stan!  From the Raymond Kindergarten.

Owls

Earlier this month the kindergarten students were invited to a preschool presentation on owls.  We had the opportunity to learn more about these fascinating birds thanks to a very engaging wildlife biologist.

We saw different models of owls, including this great horned owl.

We learned about their feeding habits, how they hunt, and where they live.
We also got to hear the different calls that these four species make.

We'd like to say thank you to all involved for this experience!

Hamster Fun

We had a special guest visit kindergarten this morning - meet Spider Mouse, a teddy bear hamster that belongs to one of Mrs. D'Agnone's students.  We had fun watching her run around in her hamster ball, petting her soft fur, and learning about why she is a nocturnal animal (one that sleeps during the day and is awake all night).

Thanks Spider Mouse for the special visit!
